چکیده

in the last. Bermuda hay made up a large part of the total dry matter intake during the last 47 days of the trial. Daily intake of protein should have been very adequate in the early part of the test, but would have declined to marginal levels during the last 56 days due to the weather related failure to grow green forage. The overall response to providing 200 mg. of monensin to cattle grazing fescue, later supplemented with bermuda hay, was excellent in a 112-day test conducted in southeast Oklahoma. Some question remains as to the response on high vs. low quality forage, but it appears that the response was larger as the forage quality was lowered.

Limit-feeding corn as an alternative to hay for gestating beef cows.

Three experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of limit-feeding corn-based diets as an alternative to hay for beef cows in gestation and early lactation. Seventy or 71 mature, pregnant Simmental crossbred cows (average weight = 589 +/- 10 kg) were used in each trial. Each of 29 or 30 cows was fed approximately 5 kg of whole shelled corn, 1.2 kg of a pelletted supplement, and 1 kg of...

Monensin and the prevention of tryptophan-induced acute bovine pulmonary edema and emphysema.

3-Methylindole, a ruminal fermentation product of tryptophan, induces acute pulmonary edema and emphysema in cattle, and 3-methylindole is present in the ruminal fluid and blood of cows with a natually occurring form of this disease. Monensin, a polyether antibiotic and widely used feed additive for beef cattle, prevented tryptophan-induced acute bovine pulmonary edema and emphysema. Monensin a...

Effect of different levels of monensin in diets containing whole cottonseed on milk production and composition of lactating dairy cows

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of feeding different levels of monensin on feed intake, milk production and composition, and milk fattyacid profile in lactating Holstein cows. Four multiparous cows averaging 517 ± 47 (SD) kg in body weight and 101 ± 19.8 (SD) days in milk were housed individually in tie-stalls. The study was conducted as a 4 × 4 Latin square design for ...

Duration of inhibition of 3-methylindole production by monensin.

A series of in vitro and in vivo trials was conducted to determine if continuous monensin feeding for up to 56 d would reduce ruminal conversion of L-tryptophan (TRP) to 3-methylindole (3MI). Fourteen mature beef cows were adapted to a maintenance diet for 3 wk. In trial I, the sampling time to optimize 3MI production was determined. Trials II through IV were to determine the duration of effica...

High Levels of Monensin to Mid Lactating Dairy Cows: Nutrient Digestibility, Ruminal Fermentation and Microbial Protein Synthesis

The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation and microbial protein synthesis of mid-lactating cows fed high dietary levels of monensin. Twelve Holstein cows were distributed into four 3 × 3 latin squares and assigned to the following treatments: control (CON), monensin 24 (M24, addition of 24 mg monensin/kg diet DM) and monensin 48 (M48, addition of 48 ...
